Won't what he did still cut down on the light output?

You can also ask me since i'm in the thread. The answer is no. Not noticeably at least. None of those surfaces really point in any sort of direction that would be important to you seeing the road. I've done this on several different type's of cars with no issues.

Not really. The reflector is still intact. Your only paint the non functional (just for looks) part.

Yesterday,

Replaced my green radiator with an OEM replacement from radiatorbarn.com. Went pretty smoothly, but I had to drill out the drain plug of the old radiator... The damn thing stripped out when I tried to open it.

Today,

Wash, Clay Bar, Wax, Tire shine, cleaned the rims, armor all'ed the dash/console/steering wheel/boot cover, dusted the roll bar and wind blocker, vacuumed the carpets.

Now I just have to wait out the supposed rain we're supposed to be getting...

Got crapped on by a bird with the top down. The dirty bugger hit the windshield about six inches from the top of the glass and it splattered all over. Probably one of the reasons Henry Ford decided to start putting roofs on cars I guess.

Installed some passive crossovers in the doors of my NB between my 8" woofers and the Aurasound NSW-2 extended range speakers. Even with just the Kenwood KDC BT945u headend providing power the system has come alive. Now I need to spend some quality time tweaking the response curve. That will entail a lot of driving, DARN!

Since I'm plotting to go F/I down the road, I did a compression test (thanks, Kuksi). This is what I got:

Front to back:
#1: 203 psi
#2: 199 psi
#3: 182 psi, 188 psi after a bit of oil
#4: 199 psi

I know it's within specs but should I consider trying to look into what's up with cylinder #3? And if so, what is likely to be the issue? The way I interpret the numbers, it is the valves not shutting completely tight.

Nope. Rings. Adding the oil helps the rings seal a bit better. In any case I'd do the test several times and average them out. But you probably should do a refresh at the minimum anyways.

Exactly. And oil only had a slight effect, so I figured the problem was at the top of the cylinder.

Yesterday took some time to look underneath for the first time, since I had puchased the car sight unseen. Found one of these at each corner. Pleasant surprise. I figure they were put on with the tires at around 30k or so (47k now). They were set at 4. Set them at 1 to see what the other end of the spectrum felt like.

When you guys talk about switching to E85. Do you mean the ethanol type gasoline derived from corn?

If so, why do you switch?

socal pat

12th May 2011, 20:33

It allows for more advanced timing due to cooler burn (amongst other things) = More power!!

Triple88A

12th May 2011, 22:00

When you guys talk about switching to E85. Do you mean the ethanol type gasoline derived from corn?

If so, why do you switch?

Yes sir.

Few of the positives include more timing, equivalent to racing fuel as far as knock resistance, more even combustion (gasoline is more of a low pressure then big peak then low again) in other words the engine gets stressed a lot less however more continuously, cooler burn, can be leaned out more for cruise safety for better efficiency, all those allow for more power, a lot cheaper than even octane 87, smell of alcohol instead of nasty coal smell, exhaust is not black.. more like golden, at last alcohol cleans the fuel system, also better emissions Thats about it for the positives.

Negatives are you will burn more of it as it doesnt have as much energy in it as gasoline does, it attracts water so injectors tend to get gummy at the nozzle from the incoming air after some time however thats no different than octane getting gummy on the inside of the injectors, it tends to produce a bit more co2 however that gets picked up by the new corn for more fuel, some older cars fuel systems cannot handle it - miatas are not having issues however you'll need new injectors as the stockers will be maxing out, timing is hard to adjust as E85 does not knock even if you push the timing too far, at last not many gas stations carry it so you have to search for them and know where they are.

What about the fuel tank corrosion issues? I always heard that the main difference besides the ECU between BMW E-85 and stock models was the fuel system wouldn't corrode using E-85.

Triple88A

13th May 2011, 18:41

See thats a common misconception. They say it will screw up your fuel system as its very corrosive. Methanol is what will screw you up, not Ethanol. The only corrosive issue with Ethanol is that it attracts water and that water can cause issues in a metal tank however thats not much different than gasoline.

13th May 2011, 20:10

Can only be done with NB1's or all NB's?

Well, I was referring to NB's under boost. In most cases you'd be running less than the 23* which the stock timing would put you at. With E85 you can run that number and If you run an EMU that allows it you can advance it even more provided you are seeing results that support even more agressive advance.

You can buy slotted discs that will allow NB owners to advance base timing as well if your EMU doesn't support it.

The only corrosive issue with Ethanol is that it attracts water and that water can cause issues in a metal tank however thats not much different than gasoline. The only way moisture can be attracted to fuel in your gas tank is while you are fueling and from the residual air left in the tank after the fill. The fuel system is sealed from the atmosphere once the gas cap goes on! Both of these will not introduce noticeable volumes of "attracted" water.

As well the sloshing of the fuel in the tank will help 'mix' the water with the ethanol. Remember the high school chemistry experiment that proved that water and ethanol (alcohol) are miscible in all proportions? Check this:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090402214641AAtS8cD

Or for a more university level explanation:

http://www.mpcfaculty.net/mark_bishop/solubility_entropy.htm

Note that gas engined boats, gas powered garden tools, etc. have atmospheric vented fuel systems so they may suffer from slight water attraction into the tank.

Yeah... I noticed the same problem with one of mine when I replaced my worn shifter boots and gave things the once over. Snapped in 3 places. :(

It's a wave washer. There should be two of 'em. If I'm not mistaken they put tension on the shifter and center it when popped out of gear.

Not to jump the queue but I used a rattle can of Rustoleum Hammered Finish in a gunmetal gray for mine. Not an OE finish but I felt like changing things up a bit.

I was really apprehensive about doing it. So many different surfaces and that damn rubber trim to bugger things up. I shouldn't have worried. A simple masking off (with several little bits of painter's tape cut to suit), a good coat of primer and two light coats of paint. Came out superb. One wouldn't know that they didn't come from the factory that way. It's been almost a year now and they still look as good as day one.

The dealer owed me a detachable face stereo since they lost my faceplate. They sent me to an aftermarket shop to get it installed. This 400 pound guy got in my car and was pulling at the top of the windshield, door etc to get in and out of the car. He did not look good for the car. I would watch the suspension go down. I asked the manager to just give me the stereo but the not so nice guy refused. I called the dealer. I have put in around 50 stereos in my life. I said I dont want this guy working on my car. I was afraid of the damage he was doing. The dealer called me back and told me it was OK to take the stereo and do it myself. By that time the owner had come. He was much nicer than his employee. He said no problem for me to take the stereo and do it myself. He even gave me some wireless connectors to do the job. By the way the not so nice manager told me 90-120 minutes to do the job but it only took me around 30 minutes. Install was cake since the new unit and the old unit were both Pioneer.

I drove my car unnecessarily to pick up my GF (She lives a few blocks away) just because I love driving my car and she likes it too. I also drove my friend to the grocery and I was able to fit two people's groceries and my golf clubs in the trunk (she had to put some of the bags in her lap. I also looked at my splash guard and thought about putting it back on but decided not to.

Received plenum, EGR base and intake manifold gasketsfrom Rosenthal today. Getting ready to do a complete intake manifold clean. Not sure I'll have time to do it before I go on my road trip vacation next weekend.

Also recieved my 8ga wiring kit so I can add my 75w/ch amp to my stereo. This I WILL get done before my road trip. All I have to do is find a way to pass the +12v and remote turn on through the trunk firewall. The amp will live behind the passenger seat, under the rear wall carpet.

Lastly I'm preparing the next in my series of under $25 mods which I'll post pictures of when I'm done.

Lots to do before I head out for a (minimum) 1200 mile road trip next weekend.

FINALLY got my 75 w/ch amp mounted behind the passenger seat. While looking for a way to run the 8ga power wire into the trunk I found space I never knew existed.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s309/shoult/Vehicles/2000%20Mazda%20Miata/Stereo%20Install/IMG_1138.jpg

The two pictures above show a space I found on the right side of the gas tank. It's about 6x6 and runs from the passenger compartment through to the trunk (about 12-14").

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s309/shoult/Vehicles/2000%20Mazda%20Miata/Stereo%20Install/IMG_1139.jpg

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s309/shoult/Vehicles/2000%20Mazda%20Miata/Stereo%20Install/IMG_1140.jpg

These two pictures are of a similar space on the drivers side. It's somewhat comprimised by the gas filler neck though.

So now I have 8" woofers in the doors, 2" Aura Whisper extended range speakers in the BOSE tweeter spots, passive crossovers at 2K mounted in the door driven by a Kenwood BT-945u head end and a Jensen 75w/ch XA-2150 power amp.

I can now actually HEAR music at highway speeds with the top down. Since I'm leaving for vacation on a 550 (one way) trip, this is an important step!

I think I also fixed my antenna that I had cut while swapping interiors. It's gonna be a great trip.

I had new springs and shocks installed yesterday. My 80,000 mile shocks where blown out. So, I had some H&R springs and Koni Sport adjustables installed. We thought it would drop the car 1.5" all around, but the front came down a little more than expected. Also, fresh alignment.

So, last night I turned left through an intersection on a green light and wasn't pushing the car any harder than I have in the past year, but the the back end broke out and slid a little. I didn't hit any of the cars waiting at the light but it did give me a real shock.

I banged a speed bump this morning pulling into the office parking lot. So, I have to learn how to drive on the new suspension and creep over speed bumps. It's still fun to drive and gets better gas mileage than my truck.

In Ontario, your car would be permanently impounded, you would lose your license for six months and you would pay a $10,000 fine. Any speed more than 50 km/hr (about 31 mph) over the speed limit gets this treatment.

Yes, I retracted the piston. This is not the issue, but rather that the pads are physically too big. The back pad will not fit as it is bigger than the gap allowed by the U bracket that the caliper is mounted on. Thank you for your attention to this!

put on some '01 16" wheels on my '99, still getting used to the different ride. The tire guys put 45psi in , adjusted down to 28psi feels a lot better but I still need to get an alignment done. The local tuner shop wants $200 to do a full-on race quality job, I can't justify that much.

I spend $92 at a shop, they did custom alignments + let me set in it.

Call around to a few other places, $200 is one hell of a stretch

Great detailing job, it looks like brand new car!!!
I'm new, just got my green 99 4 weeks ago, it needs a lot of work under the hood. Thinking of painting the valve cover as well, what paint did you use? A hi temp wrinkle paint may be? Did you sand blast the cover b4 painting?
Cheers

Just a wash and wax a few days ago, dusted her off yesterday, and nothing but top down driving today!

Readjusted my tire pressure, too. I hadn't checked it since we got warmer weather... All four were at about 38psi. I dropped them to 32, might go even a bit lower.

Thanks, Seashed. Now that you reminded me, I remember those Lotii and Jim Clark. I knew there was a reason the yellow accents (did my calipers in the same color too) just felt so right...

Thanks, DFitz; fortunately, it's finally lookin' hot and sunny for at least the next week, otherwise yeah, I'd be keeping her in the garage until the next dry day...

... what paint did you use? A hi temp wrinkle paint may be? Did you sand blast the cover b4 painting? ...

Thanks, Snow Squirrer. Found a company nearby that does powder-coating for architects and builders. Brought them the cleaned-up cam cover, they sand-blasted it and applied the yellow color, baked on. I did the lettering later in BRG body color touch-up paint.

My photos above were taken late last night in the garage under poor lighting. Here's what it looks like today in the sunshine:

Ok so what is involved in cleaning a detailing an engine bay like that? I mean do you spray on cleaner like Gunk and pressure wash it? Or do you go around hand cleaning with kero and rags? Lastly, do you use Armorall on everything?

I might take mine to a professional, my back wouldn't be happy I'm sure, doing it myself.

I also have a 2002 ls 6 speed and about three days ago had to replace right rear caliper due to leak at e brake connection. I replaced rear pads at the same time. Yes you have sport suspension. Sent you a PM with Napa parts numbers and info if it helps. Thanks to the help on this forum, went fairly smoothly. Research how to retract the caliper.

To get back on topic, had a new Robbins top installed yesterday. Looks great. Lady installed it in about three hours, well worth $250, and she saved me the old top as it was not in too bad a condition. The 92 degree heat and sun allowed me to latch it by afternoon with a little help from my son. Again, all the research/posts from others on the forums helped immensely. I took my 99 into the local Mazda dealership to have the Fuel Fill recall & Fuel Injector harness recall taken care of. While there the service writer pulled up history on my VIN. My car now has 35k miles on it. The last time it showed at a Mazda dealership was Sept 1999 & it had 27k miles on it. So in the last 11 years there have only been 8k put on it & I put on 1.5k in the last two months,

memphis: You do realize that does not make a lot of sense. 27K in less than a year and then nothing for the nest 12 years. Something in that equation doesn't sound right to me. Do you know where the car was for all those years before you bought it?

This was the case with my last '88 323 GTX. It had a lite life until 1997 or so, then was purchased by the 2nd owner, parked in a barn, and had mazda comp and other performance parts added to it for about 2 years (project car)..then sat unloved for about 9 more years. At that time the guy could no longer pay rent and left the car to his landlord for payment. Sat a while longer, then was sold to another tuner guy..who drove it for like a day before frying a piston. Sat again for another few months then I drove 13+ hrs and bought it off of his hands.

And now the rest of the story: Spent 2 months of 12 hour days putting it back together and making it road worthy. Drove it for another two months. Then, one unusually warm morning, my concentration lapsed for a sec on the way to my 8am class (after pulling a "mostly" all-nighter), went into a turn a hair too quick, caught a little loose gravel that was on the road, rear wheels broke free, and I could not regain control do to the lower traction of my snow tires (due to the unusually warm morning). Came to a stop, nose first in the ditch just after the apex, but not before plowing through 7 mailboxes.

Replaced what I could with my spares collection. Then maxing out a credit card on body work (the shop did not deliver what they promised) and I ended up selling it to a guy who said he would fix it right a year later.

If only cars could only talk...

I got the tubular manifold from a local wrecking yard - $100. I happened to do a search on their website and they had one available. They didn't have the necessary 2001-2005 egr tube (new $45) so I purchased that and gaskets from forum sponsor Mazmart.
The bolts weren't terribly rusty. I soaked them the previous day with BP Blaster.
I don't work particularly fast and not always having the perfect tools for the job it took me 6 hours including cleanup.

You did good! I paid $225 for my manifold, heat shields, and egr tube along with all the necessary fasteners. However, when I got it the studs were screwed up so I had to replace all three of them which cost another $10 or so. But...the seller, Panic motorsports sent me the next item I needed at no charge to be fair. Which is why I always check with Steve first when I need something! I figure in reality I have $185 into it total.

No issues removing the old and replacing the new. Went fast!

Sunday morning, I started driving to work @6:15am. Half way there my front end starts shaking & I hear a low thump, thump, thump. One of my tires started to seperate. Well I get out my jack, tire tool, & spare to start removing the tire. Well, a week ago Saturday I had my wheels rotated & balanced, also had the tire shop remove the locking lugs & replace with standard, which they did. They were 3/4" instead of 13/16, so my tire tool would not take the tire off . I then get back into my car & being that the tire was still intact, I made it to work, driving 30mph. There I went to my tool box, got a socket & breaker bar, & changed my spare. I worked 1/2 day, @ double time on Sundays, went & had some new tires put on. What a day.:ohno: Well today I am gonna call the tire shop I had the rotation done & give the manager a piece of my mind. But on the bright side, the new tires ride great:D

I had the FM Afco shocks installed on my NB about a year ago and love them; this past week I added the full FM rail/butterfly brace, V8Roadster control arms, 949 adjustable links, FM sways, poly diff bushings, and MS motor mounts. I also added a Maruha header and cat/mid, new top, M-Tuned coolant reroute, Exedy HD clutch, new slave cyl w/ braided line, new Robbins canvas top, all new weatherstripping on the entire car, water pump change, main seals, cam seals, etc., Gates timing belt, all new hoses in the engine bay, injector o-rings, etc., and had the intake fully cleaned. The car feels like new. That's the happy side--the unhappy? I asked the shop to measure runout on the crankshaft and it is 0.22mm, 0.08mm from the point at which Mazda says it's toast. Looks like I'll either need a rebuild shortly, a used motor install, or, if I am feeling extravagant, a built Maruha or Aizawa motor install in the not too distant future.

I fixed the wiring harness problem with the Rotrex piggyback yesterday, so today I drove it! A glorious hot sunny day, and she purred like a kitten.

How long did it take you to replace?

Its easy if the bolts on the links come out easy. On mine they were rusted badly so it took me about an hr and a half to do the front since i wanted to keep the stock links.

Oh yeah, longtime lurker, first time poster.

Thanks for that

Installed Raceland Luggage Rack on the Shinsen.
$129 plus shipping.
Raceland had to email assembly instructions.
About 3 hours.
Compares favorably with higher priced racks
I've observed.

Replaced the original brake pads all around with PBR ULT pads. The rotors looked good so I just scuffed them up. I bedded them in per the instructions on the box. Significant more stopping power! Much less pedal effort! The old pads were scary driving in the rain. I hope that these pads cure that.

Started work on the cylinder head swap today. Pulled off the heat shield, gave the exhaust manifold nuts and EGR fitting their first squirt of PBBlaster, and had a look around the engine bay to see if anything looked sketchy. So far no stuck bolts -- this is one of the many joys of working on California cars. Now I'm waiting for my ARP studs to arrive before I begin the real work. Since I don't know my way around Miatas yet, I'm figuring at least 8-10 hours even if all goes well, and longer if they don't. But it's summer, the days are long, and it will be good to get the old girl back on the road!

First mystery encountered during the job: where did all my 10mm sockets go? I had three of them last week. Now I only seem to have one. Perhaps they were kidnapped by aliens...

Today I replaced the camshaft position sensor. Now it even starts when the air temperature is over 100° and I've been driving it hard

Ordered new tires for her! Yokohama S Drives, should be in next Friday...

Tire guy did say the tires were made in 99, so I'm pretty sure they are the original tires. I think its about time for new ones...

2000 Base, Brilliant Black, 40625 on her, and I love her
