That's hilarious. I, too, had read the tutorial here but was frustrated that there were tons of how-to videos for NAs but none for NBs.

Here's my attempt at a how to:

https://youtu.be/FE2IaQtAaQUNice work on the video. I think I'm probably still going to give it a crack when I do mine cuz I've been looking forward to it haha

Also, have a link to your hub? Is it a cheaper solution to the NRG?

Here's the link to the Kyostar hub. It appears to be a direct (Chinese-industrial-espionage) copy of the NRG hub and at $46 its a little over half the price.

How did it feel quality wise? Solid enough? Ever seen the NRG first hand to be able to compare? I'm sure the NRG is Chinese made too so they're probably identical.

I'll probably just sand the BS name off of it lol

Yeah, we also went for a drive yesterday in the Berkshires.. We had 63 degrees I believe and although we didn't put the top down there were several convertibles with theirs lowered. Saw NO Miata of any vintage however, but a surprising number of Corvettes.

Snow in the forecast and single digit nights in the next week or so.

Why do people still deal with the nrg hub and have to play with a horn contact? The works bell hub is a direct plug and play with no need for modifications

Why do people still deal with the nrg hub and have to play with a horn contact? The works bell hub is a direct plug and play with no need for modificationsNRG hub is about half the size of the NRG since it's a "short" hub. If I ran the works bell the wheel would be in my chest. The NRG is also less than half as much. The horn issue is pretty nonexistent since it's an easy fix, so nothing to really "deal with".

Saturday I picked up a set of the LED footwell lights being sold by a member on here. He's local to me so it was easy to get my hands on them. On the way home picked up my alternator from the place that was looking at it. Sunday I went to install the alternator only to find it wasn't right. Long story short, the company who looked at it assembled it wrong with the two end pieces 180 degrees out. Once I fixed that it went in correctly. Also swapped to my winter wheels/tires since it is cooler now.

Today I finished charging the battery and went for a drive. It was short but sweet.

I use the the works bell 50mm hub. Dont know about the nrg but I doubt it's that much thinner. Besides the price, which yes it is quite a but more, I highly doubt the wheel would be in your chest with what? Maybe 10-15 mm more? To me the works bell hub is a quality piece and you can tell just by looking and holding it.

Getting ready to install my MPI wheel. The Mazda wheel came with a cover plate, not a horn so was trying to figure out the best solution that I liked. Thought about ordering from revlimiter but the thought of a $60 horn button was not appealing.

So instead, I ordered a $7 "flashpower" horn button, pulled the decal off, pulled the emblem off the MPI center plate and viola! Exactly what I wanted. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200114/26d6e53691f80ca08521b848265e91fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200114/f266602be56c041a30877762fe0eb06e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200114/26e64461c3faa73d6b85f0bb4d51e12d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200114/3b81ca17de0f05a3622a7c64f803b062.jpg

Sport brake calipers. After talking to a few folks I figured this was my best and cheapest route to larger brakes without having to sacrifice my wheels. None of the breaker vendors I spoke to had any on hand so I just went with the easy button and ordered overhauled calipers from Rock Auto. Spent a bit extra and got the coated ones. Still need to order a master cylinder and decide on the rotors and pads I want to run.

This is what I saw on the info portion on Rock Auto: "Exclusive weather-proof silver power coating preserves premium appearance and prevents rust"

I'm guessing that is supposed to be powder coating. To me it's more of a gray than silver, but looks pretty good. Time will tell just how resistant the coating is.

I went with the silver header paint on a NB2 heat shield and it cleaned up pretty nice. Installed with new yellow zinc bolts.

How much did you give for your manifold? Got mine from Tom for just 25 bucks due to buggered EGR threads. Got a HUGE thread die from Amazon to fix up the threads nicely, a brand new EGR pipe for 60 and the heat shield for 60. So all in I’m under $150 for a complete NB2 header swap.

After getting the steering wheel installed this morning I decided to start to tackle the rough, 20 year old paint to see what I could get out of it. I washed with clean slate, clay barred, heavy compound then finishing polish with my DA. I finished the hood and about half way through the rest of the car. Paint still has blemishes (need a more aggressive pad/compound to get in deeper) but pleased with the results so far. I plan on cermaic coating after it's polished.

Here's a before reflection pic and an after. Also, having a quickjack makes detailing a car so much easier on the back (note: the side of the car in the pic has only had the compounding completed, not finishing polish)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200121/0fd59241ce26d320b73c7812b7334f6b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200121/31901e4e57e896cb4a5069c670c5e37b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200121/b9458d2a7260f21cd0c124012d50ac90.jpg

Wow nice! What DA are you using? I have an old school Porter Cable 7424 (original version, not the updated higher power version) with the 8mm throw, and some 5" Lake Country pads. I tried Meg's 105/205 on yellow foam pads on my black hood, and while it did correct most of it, it took a lot of work/pressure. I hope to get a 15mm throw DA at some point, and some sort of microfiber cutting pads. Also want to try Jescar Correction Compound and Sonax Perfect Finish from Obsessed Garage.

Also want to try Jescar Correction Compound and Sonax Perfect Finish from Obsessed Garage.Nothing crazy. Just a Torqx DA. It does most of the job.

Got a transmission jack available? I think it would be really easy with a lift and a trans jack. Hardest part for me was getting the thing lifted up into place after I changed the clutch.

Well, I finally took it in to the shop. The CEL has been on for four months, and the code says it's a leak in the vacuum line. I couldn't find the leak, so I took it in.

Today they called me and said the valve in the back needs to be replaced (I can't remember the name of the valve) and while we're at it I need new rear brakes. But we also learned that the PO had welded in the wrong catalytic converter. The input pipe is too big and the output too small. The man said the whole works will cost ~$950.

I ain't got $950! I don't know what to do. I told him to do the valve and the brakes and we'll wait a few months before replacing the CC. I'll have to save up. After all, I've been driving this car for seven years with the current CC, so let's hope it holds together for a while longer before it tears up the transmission, which is what the man said would happen.

Meanwhile, I'm going online to see what alternatives I can find.

The catalytic converter is going to tear up the transmission? Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I don't see how that can happen.

Did both alternator and the accessory belt last night. Ended up taking off the intake manifold brace in order to loosen the alternator. Took way too long as the splash guard was held on by these stupid plastic bolts that didn't have a head so I have to break them off.

Anyone know the proper torque specs for everything? I kind of just tightened until I felt it was tight and didn't overdo anything.

Noice! Wish I would have kept my steering from my Mazdaspeed Protege. It was great.

The protege steering wheels will directly swap onto an NB miata and you can use the miata airbag. I know because Guardian Designs messed up with my wheel and used a protege core for some reason. The rear trim is different though, much to my annoyance. The dealer had hard time locating a new one but eventually they did.

Cars around here can still have rust issues, depending on the model and how the undercarriage is made and/or protected (or not). Just nowhere near as bad as what I've seen from the northeast. For instance I still have the original 25-year old suspension bolts on my Integra that have been removed and reinstalled many times over the years. Have never broken any of them. But then some cars can develop the cancer around fender pinch welds and the like, if the factory undercoating starts to come off.

Last time I autocrossed I used the larger front sway I have. When I swapped back to the MSM bar I found the larger one had been moving side to side, resulting in damage to the bushings. The larger bar does not have any stops to prevent this from happening. Solution was to source a couple of split collars to use as stops:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49431448338_785857ff17_b.jpg

I bought the first one from Amazon for $7.29. It was the last one so waited a day or two to see if the stock came back up, but it was going to be 2-3 months before they were back in stock. After some searching found the same one on a different site, this time it was $28. Overall cost was $35 which isn't bad for a set of precision stainless collars. I'll post pictures of them installed once I get the bushings I have ordered.

More deliveries set for tomorrow, then the fun begins.

Now I finally have a good excuse to get back under the car to see if there's any leaks from the back of the engine or gearbox since I installed the new RMS and oil pan lip seal over a month ago.

I had to order an O2 sensor socket for a bum sensor on my wife’s car and decided to pull the upstream on the Miata as well. I don’t have a CEL or any problems but my mpg isn’t quite what I expect and I thought it might be getting “lazy”. It’s easy to remove and the internet suggests that an overnight soak in gasoline will clean it and since the internet is never wrong, I decided to give it a go.

I was unable to get the sensor to start turning with the heat shield in place so I removed the heat shield. Half the bolts were already sheared and I managed to shear all of the remaining except one. And after I removed the heat shield, I discovered that I HAD loosened the sensor already and didn’t need to remove the heat shield after all. D’oh!

After an overnight soak in the gas tank of my snowblower (the most convenient source of gasoline to hand), I reinstalled the sensor and took a short drive. One bolt seems to be enough to hold on the heat shield as I didn’t notice any rattling. Whether the cleaning made any difference on the mpg remains to be seen. My impression was that I was able to start from a stop with less revving and clutch slippage, but I could have just been overlaying my hopes/expectations onto reality.

The drive that I took was to pick up a new reclining chair at Costco. Being a strictly car family, no SUV or pickup, moving larger items often calls for a convertible for it’s unlimited headroom. Actually my Triumph Spitfire does a lot of this work as it surprisingly has more interior space than the Miata but right now the hard top is on it and removing and replacing it would take close to an hour so the Miata got the call. Since it’s January, the better heater was appreciated as well.

Finally got around to checking for a parasitic electrical drain. To do this, you connect a multimeter between a battery terminal and the cable out (I did it using the negative terminal to keep from worrying about any shorting issues) and then put the meter on the max amp scale (in my case this was 10 amps). You need to make sure nothing is turned on when you do this as you want to measure anything that shouldn't be there. For additional info see the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdIKNnwEjIs It is very thorough and should be easy for anyone to follow (even without any electrical background).

My result? A whopping 0 amp flow. Whatever I may have going on, there is nothing that is pulling down the battery in that manner. Might be looking at getting a replacement alternator after all.

So today I received a couple of packages:

Unfortunately I think the brake master cylinder I received is for an ABS equipped car so it isn't going to work for me. I ordered a new/rebuilt one from Rock Auto to correct that problem. Just for sh*ts and grins I mounted up one of the front calipers and rotors to check wheel clearance. I am happy that it all looks good. No pictures until I get everything installed (patience is a virtue). Looks great though, the bigger Sport rotor really fills things up.

Drove it for about 20 minutes with the top down. high 40's but the sun peeked out enough and with the heat on it was pretty nice.

Then I pulled the top windshield trim and driver's A-pillar*, ran wiring for my radar detector, soldered/shrink tubed the wiring to the fuse tap, and got it all buttoned up except for the ground wire. Rain started moving in so I had to move the Miata back into its spot to get the new black Jeep inside before the rain hit. I don't have enough room to work in the foot well with both vehicles in the garage, so I'll finish it up later.

How well could you see the gauges before with the original wheel, and how well can you see them now? When I sit in my normal position, the OEM wheel barely touches the top edge of the gauges with my normal line of sight. I'm afraid that a wheel like that would obscure the area around 3K-4K RPM on the (stock) tach and the 70-80 MPH area on the speedo.

Biggest question I would have is what type of projector that uses. Some are good and some are not so good. I remember the old Denji projector headlights for 92-95 Honda Civics back in the day, which were notoriously awful for light output because they used H3 projectors, which are normally designed for fog lights.

Ya honestly I'm not too sure, from a glance the projectors seems to look very similar to whats on the OEM housings. On the website it says they are made by a OEM supplier (and DOT approved) so I would hope they would use the right type of projector but obviously that could be BS. They seemed to have decent output when I first turned them on in the garage (good cut off also) but I guess I will find out when I get on the road in the spring time. I had the DDM tuning HID kit with my stock headlamps, but the interface to the Spec-D low beams is different (H1 vs 9006), so I think I will have to order different style bulbs if I want to retain those.

I'm afraid that a wheel like that would obscure the area around 3K-4K RPM on the (stock) tach and the 70-80 MPH area on the speedo.

Haven’t driven yet, but I can see everything ok. Seat is one setting from the back. I fit the Miata pretty good though (long legs, but short torso). I did a foamectomy last fall but found the lower seating position wasn’t worth the loss of comfort, so I reversed it after I put the car in the garage for the winter.

I'm 6' 2" and fit so much better after doing the seat foamectomy and taking that piece and using it as a lumbar cushion. That and removing the dead pedal rest, along with the gas pedal modification, removing the sunshades, going to a small rear-view mirror and removing the steering wheel shims made it so much more comfortable to drive long distances.

Finally after about 6 weeks I've put ~750 miles of city driving on my new clutch, as recommended by Exedy (no highway driving since that doesn't use the clutch much at all). So yesterday I took it up on the interstate and wound it out a bit on the on-ramp. I'm still a little nervous about totally going WOT, since that's what killed the last clutch. Although I'm pretty sure that last one was some Chinese no-name Amazon special.

After more research, it appears I received the master/booster from a MSM which has ABS (despite my telling the recycler that I didn't want ABS). I then managed to order the wrong master from Rock Auto so that one went back and I'm now waiting on the replacement.

Received the new front sway bushings the other day. Slight size difference between the new and original as seen here:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49461224203_653eaba8d8_b.jpg

Shouldn't be an issue though.

It was a bit warmer today so went to the garage to start my brake swap. Front went on without too much trouble in about 1/2 hour. The rear though was a bigger PITA. I tried bending the splash guard but had no luck so had to cut it down some. Didn't get a picture of that, will do so when I install the other side. The rubber seal for the caliper hinge pin in the back didn't want to go on with the caliper in place, so I removed it and put the seal on the caliper (it was easier to put it in the bracket side in place).

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49461710741_ea831aff96_b.jpg

I had cleaned/lubed the hubs the last time I did the brakes, there was some corrosion present in spite of that:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49461226088_70d2d7edb6_b.jpg

A little work with a wire brush and then lubed them again:

Driver's side is done except for bleeding, will finish up tomorrow. For comparison here is the difference between the 1.8 brakes and the Sport brakes.

One thing to note with the coated calipers, it's a good idea to run any fasteners through the holes before trying to install on the car. There was a little bit of overspray, just enough to make it difficult to get the bolts started otherwise.

That rear caliper piston boot looks a bit jacked up. Did you straighten it out before installing? Usually just requires something like a pick or small screwdriver to slip in there to burp air out of the boot.

Ya looks like the seal lip is folded over (no bueno). I saw a trick on a youtube video where you put the seal on the first part of the piston that goes into the caliper and then slide it across you slide the piston in rather than sliding the piston in first and sliding the boot over the top edge.

Good eyes. Yes, that problem has been corrected.

Finished the brake caliper/rotor install today. The cutting of the passenger side rear shield went much better, largely due to cutting in the direction that my aviation snips were made to cut.

After the cutting:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49466661766_de4cedea78_b.jpg

I'm not showing what the driver's side looks like. It's pretty easy to just push back the shields on the front wheels to get the clearance needed. Whenever I replace the wheel bearings I'll get the correct shields and install those.

My oldest came over to help me get things bled. Hoping to get out tomorrow and bed in the new pads.

Not my car, but I followed an ND RF for a couple of miles on the highway yesterday. I had to chuckle to myself when a Camry pulled even with it for a minute - that’s when it struck me how small it is! Sloping sides and skinny tires - continually reminding me of the old Opel GT from the rear view. And I’m ok with that, although the club convert will be the one for me.

Removed the soft line and curly Q clutch lines, decided I didn't want to use the 65" clutch line from Goodwin (kept the oem hard line), ordered the 22" and then installed a new master and slave cylinder from their kit.

Also removed all 4 rotors to be replaced and will start rebuilding the calipers this week. Glued ebay 3D printed dip stick handle to my broken OEM dip stick (hoping it can withstand the heat, we'll see). Looking forward to the improved pedal feel for both the clutch and brakes, as well as refreshed braking system.

Finally, decided to clean out the front fenders "while I was down there". Was surprised how much was stuck in there, glad I did it.

Very successful weekend overall.

PS - Posted the 65" braided stainless steel clutch line in the "For sale" section for a slight discount (open package).

Suffice to say, yes, they are exact copies of the Mazda part except for the way the adjusting screw mounts. I just swapped the adjustment screw from my old lights into the ball / socket on the new lights.

You must re-use the end caps from your old fog lights. These allow you to just plug right into the existing fog light connector.

Just finished a 3 day job of replacing the fuel injectors, cam seals, crank seal, rear cap seal, spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body and upper intake manifold. That one hole in the manifold everyone claims to get clogged only had less than a 1/8" opening. Holy cow! What a difference:jump:. Engine runs smooth and more powerful than before. Didn't realize how bad she was getting. No codes before, but she had hard time starting. Cranking was normal, but firing up took too long. Oil leaks from seals never replaced at previous TB and WP 40K ago. After test run, cleaned and degreased the engine bay and crud from under the engine. Before re-installing the Intake manifold and Valve cover, painted them with VHT black wrinkle finish with red lettering and stainless steel bolts.

It depends on what you mean by intake removal....

Removing the upper half from the bottom half is not too bad. You can completely clean the upper and MOSTLY clean the bottom half as well. But removing the bottom half from the engine is a PITA. But you also can't quite completely clean everything without removing it.

We bought the house last year, but this is the first time the Miata has made the trip. It's about 140 miles. It rained hard, then there were high winds, lather, rinse, repeat. I replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders because the slave was leaking. I'm not gonna lie - getting the new slave in was a colossal pita. It was really difficult getting both hands in there to get both bolts and the hydraulic line all aligned properly. I swore at it savagely multiple times to no avail. I figured out how to fit a full-sized wheel and tire in the trunk of an NB.

That's right, all you need to do is have a blowout at 75mph, and what's left of your tire will tuck into the trunk nicely! I've had plenty of flats in my life, but this was the first time I experienced a blowout while at speed. I'm just thankful it was a rear tire and not a front!

Thankfully, there was no damage to the wheel. The tires are less than a year old and have plenty of tread left. I'm guessing I may have hit something that cut the tire and then it failed while I was driving. I don't recall hitting anything, but I had just been driving through an industrial area, so I might have hit a piece of metal and not realized it.

Oh well, looks like a pair of new tires is on my shopping list. I'm thinking about getting something a bit wider so the tires are more square with no stretch.

a blowout at 75mph,

I've never seen a tire come apart like that, which wasn't rubbing on some suspension component. That is frightening, have a peek under the car and check the other rear tire for unusual wear?

It's a carbon fiber ducktail spoiler that I got from Togue Run about 6 years ago. They are no longer in business, but there have been some fiberglass versions on ebay in the last couple of years.

Then I told it, "My Toyota wouldn't treat me this way." Everything was buttoned up within 10 minutes after that.

Thread the hydraulic line in FIRST loosely. THEN attach the slave to the trans. Then tighten and pressure bleed.

I always wanted an electric telescopic fishing pole and suddenly realized that the antenna on my little sporty car would fit the bill. Now I just have to figure out how to mount the reel. Meanwhile, I put one of those rubber thingies from Moss on the car so the radio (that I never listen to) still works.

Got it back on the road. I had got two bad wheel bearings from Road Atlanta in December. I changed the rear last week only to find on the test drive I did not have the axle seated back into the diff and damaged the threads on the axle. After finding that a spare junk axle went right in I got a used axle. That one seated right in.

Also found my original front hub on the passenger side went out. Well more like the grease seal had failed and water had gotten in. Changed that with my last spare and no more bad wheel bearings for now. Time to hit the junkyard as two 100k cars have shown up and they need to donate their front hubs to the spare pile.

Now that the Miata is back on the road I can tear down the daily driver Svt Focus and do inner and outer tie rods plus figure out whatever is clunking in the front. Sounds like its going to fall apart. Its just got the 196k worn suspension problems.

Did you have to trim any of your OE fan shrouds to make them fit with the thicker radiator? I had to in a couple of places on mine. My car actually had some crappy aftermarket fan on the driver side when I bought it, I guess because they thought the OE fan wouldn't fit. But I got an OE fan from the local Miata salvage yard and made it fit just fine with a little trimming.

clarkp4

10th February 2020, 16:29

PatrickGSR94, I only had to cut a small semi-circle out of the driver's side fan shroud so it would clear the lower radiator hose - maybe about 1/3 of a half-dollar sized circle.

I also popped out the fan shroud nuts from the stock radiator, threaded them onto the fan shroud bolts and cut 1/8" off of the fan shroud bolts then back-chased the threads. The stock bolts are just a bit too long and they bottom out in the CSF radiator before they're tight. I just cut mine off because I didn't want a stack of washers there to take up space and I didn't want to go to the hardware store for new bolts.

New brakes up front, with one of the Powerstop kits and Goodrich stainless brake lines.
I also fixed a niggling little coolant leak. I changed out the oring on the hard return pipe under the exhaust manifold. Now the only thing I smell when I lift the hood on a hot motor is the oil leaking from the VC gasket, onto the header. I bought a new VC gasket from Priority when I ordered the hose kit, so it's the next project.

I replaced the front hubs with a set of Centrics I got from Goodwin, while I had everything tore apart. I'm good for another 120k.

According to the manual, “When a metal tape or CrO2 tape is inserted, the player will automatically compensate for it and the metal indicator will be illuminated”. I don’t know enough about cassettes to explain why compensation is needed though.

Metal tapes have a different bias applied. AIUI, bias is the addition of an electric current (either AC or DC) at specific frequencies when recording for doing some voodoo-hoodoo to the sound. Basically, adjusting the bias allows the recording to have less low-end distortion at the expense of higher tones becoming muddled, or allowing clearer higher tones at the expense of lower bass distortion. Metal tapes have a different bias than regular poly tapes and it creates less extremes of either side-effect. They were basically the "High-Fi" versions of cassette tapes. Metal tapes need different equalizer settings to make the recording sound its best vs. the same recording on a regular tape. Early tape players had a manual switch/button for playing metal tapes, but later players could detect them and adjust the EQ settings automatically. It wouldn't hurt anything at all to play a metal tape in a regular player w/o switching it to metal mode (many players didn't even have a "metal" option), but the sound quality would suffer a bit.

Or maybe the light comes on when MiataBee blasts Anthrax, Slayer, and GWAR out of that sweet blue ride.

Finally got around to some things after last weekends track day. Found out why I was down on power in my last session, the intake was loose between the MAF and the throttle body, and the grommet for the IAT sensor had fallen into the tube so there were big leaks causing the MAF to read wrong air flow. Also found that the seal for the reservoir for the oil catch can was cracked and spraying a fine mist of oil on the firewall.

Got all of that taken care of and it runs great again, now to check the ride heights tomorrow, and put in my new seat and it's ready to go for the next one.

Never added a circuit to a car before so that was interesting. It was late when I finished so I only tested them on the interstate. They work and they have a better sound. Can’t tell if they’re louder yet. I never used the original horn on the interstate.

Had to pump it a couple of times to get it to stiffen up, then the next time I went to brake it was the same. Apparently bleeding was not complete, first time I have had that problem. I was able to get them bedded in.

Back to the house and I put her up on the QuickJack to swap the master cylinders. Had to pull the cowl plate, shock tower brace, cruise control actuator and 'charger inlet piping off to make things easier. The old master cylinder came out without too much trouble, then it was in to the cabin to remove the booster nuts. I had to remove the ECU in order to access those, that made it pretty simple with using a couple of extensions and a universal. First thing to remove is the connection pin between the brake pedal and booster yoke:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49549872833_7a2d6a4ff1_b.jpg

There are four nuts, the lower left one is shown in this picture:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49550375031_467efcee33_b.jpg

Once the booster is out you will see a sort of gasket on there:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49550376256_9e2bc29325_b.jpg

I think this is probably like the isolators on the shock top hats to minimize noise. I pulled it off and transferred it to the replacement.

There is a lot of info around on the difference between master cylinders and boosters so I won't rehash all of that here. In the interest of making life easy for folks, here are the two boosters to see the differences (Sport booster on the right):

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49550377491_3ac65cb152_b.jpg

The masters have differences in length where they fit into the booster so you can't really mix and match those. Also the Sport master has an O-ring to seal where it fits into the booster.

One thing that I did was to use the proportioning valve mounting bracket off my 2000. The Sport valve is mounted vertically below the master cylinder, which would have impacted how I run the intake tube. Here is how the stock 2000 unit is mounted:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49550376631_9d5eedd8ee_b.jpg

This meant that it was a little more fiddly getting all my brake lines hooked up, I had to mix and match some of the old lines from my original master but it is done. One word of caution if you do this, be sure not to cross-thread the flare nuts when attaching the brake lines. It may take a bit but better to make sure things are lined up instead of using brute force.

Bleeding will be done tomorrow when I have my helper.

Spent a big part of the day in the garage, mostly on my back underneath. While I was off doing training I ordered a set of urethane bushings for the steering rack. First order of business was to install those. Well, to try and install them. The passenger side goes on without trouble, but the two on the driver's side are a different story. You have to remove the rack completely in order to replace those (without beating your head against the wall), and I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole at this point. So the passenger side was done and that is it.

Then I tried installing the bigger (1 1/16") front sway with the new bushings and split collars I bought. That didn't work out either. The bushings and their brackets weren't a great fit, and the collars wouldn't clear the relocated radiator brackets (moved back due to my intercooler). So for now the MSM front sway I have been using went back on.

Next I removed the center section of the butterfly brace to see what, if any, change that makes in perceived chassis stiffness. Finally I moved my way along the exhaust to see if I could figure out why it was resonating inside the cabin with the top up. Turned out the 949 rear subframe brace (that I had previously clearanced) was being contacted by the exhaust. Guess the Roadster Sport midpipe is just a little too big back there for it to work. I removed the brace and will see if that was the problem or not.

Final job was bleeding the brakes, once my helper came over. Went round and round a few times, got a lot of air out of the system except for the driver's rear. It didn't seem like anything was coming out to the point where I was concerned that the caliper was faulty. I put my Mityvac on it and sucked for a few minutes until some fluid appeared. That did the trick because afterwards bleeding went normally. At this point I think the problem I had while bedding the pads was a bunch of air in the line to the driver's rear caliper. After everything was back together I moved her over so the wife's car could spend the night in the garage. Brake pedal stayed rock hard so I'm calling that good. I will do the bedding procedure again next time I take her out as I cannot now be certain they were good the first time.

I had to make a round trip of 200 miles for work today and I took the Miata. I packed a winter coat, hat and gloves just in case. On the way back, early afternoon, the temperature was in the lower 40's but the sun was brightly shining so I thought "top down". With the hat, coat and gloves it was quite comfortable for the 100 miles, much of it at highway speeds. I've owned Triumph Spitfires for almost 40 years and cold weather top down driving in them requires a degree of ... well if not masochism, at least stiff upper lipped disregard for comfort. The Miata is sybaritic in comparison - with the windows and wind blocker up and real heat that can actually be directed from the vents onto me, it requires amazingly little commitment to sacrifice even at speeds exceeding 70 mph. There's actually less wind on me at 70 then stopped. A thoroughly enjoyable drive!

I would get the funniest looks when I drove mine with the top down when it was in the 40's and wearing short sleeves and no coat or jacket. Those heaters do a great job of warming the open co*ckpit with the windows up! :)

Or am I being particularly dense and those AREN'T seat belt holders?

You got it right. I tend to keep the passenger belt parked there to keep it from rattling around. I rarely use the driver side loop.

Installed leather shift book and e-brake handle from the UK eBay seller J-F-Customs. Delivery took about 2.5 weeks, but the leather seems to be quality and love the red contrast stitching. Not bad for $25.

Also, swapped in a stock NC 5-speed shift knob. Feels great in my hand -- much better than the stock NB knob and I don't have to worry about it being too hot/cold

Going to have to order a lower rad hose and clamp. I replaced the rad with an aluminum Koyorad. It has a slight drip there to where it was on the driveway thru the splashguard. I replaced the clamp with a screw clamp and it didnt seem to resolve it. Im guessing the hose is a bit loose from age? Anyone have any recommendations besides just drain it, pull the hose and replace it?

Sometimes hoses develop a leak between the inner layer and the threads in the casing, the fluid then flows out and drips right at the edge of the hose without leaving a telltale drip on the outside. Makes it look like it's a loose hose clamp. BT, DT.

If it's the original hose, replace it. It doesn't owe you anything.
