Just as she foretold in her 2020 song “mirrorball,” Taylor Swift was spinning in her highest heels, shining just for us at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Days before Swift heads to Tokyo to resume her landmark Eras Tour, the pop sensation attended music’s biggest night, where she was nominated for six awards including Album of the Year (for Midnights). And because Swift has proven herself to be the often-unintentional highlight of any awards show she attends — from her enthusiastic singalongs at September’s MTV Video Music Awards, to her iconic straight-faced reaction to a joke about herself at January’s Golden Globes — we decided to lean into Swift Mania and chronicle all of her on-air moments at Sunday’s ceremony. And there were some major ones!
Might it seem slightly strange to take note of a celebrity’s every appearance on a televised broadcast? If it were anyone else, sure. But if you think back to those Golden Globes last month, consider what topic you were discussing with your friends in the days afterward: not any of the evening’s big winners, but the juicy gossip getting exchanged between Swift, Selena Gomez and Keleigh Teller during a commercial break. She Walked the Carpet
Swift’s evening at the Grammys began on the busy red carpet, where she posed for photographs just minutes before the broadcast began. Evoking the aesthetic of her Reputation era, Swift stunned in a floor-length white dress, detailed with a corset in the back, black gloves and a series of glittery necklaces — including a clock choker set to midnight, in the spirit of her Midnights album getting nominated at this year’s ceremony.
She Made the Grandest of Entrances
Yep, she’s still bejeweled when she walks in the room. In a wonderfully serendipitous moment, Swift walked into the Crypto.com Arena to take her seat just as host Trevor Noah was singing her praises, allowing us all to watch her regal strut to her table. Behind-the-scenes awards show moments don’t get more star-studded than this.
She Jammed to 'Fast Car'
Vocal rest, schmocal rest. Even with her three-and-a-half-hour-long Eras Tour about to pick back up, Swift didn’t hesitate to stand up and sing along with Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs on their fabulous “Fast Car” duet.
She Deterred Lip Readers
Sorry, eagle-eyed lip readers: You won’t get the tea this time. After a viral Golden Globes moment in January — a conversation between Swift, Selena Gomez and Keleigh Teller, which may or may not have involved gossip about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet, was thoroughly analyzed on social media — the ever-savvy Swift used her folding fan at the Grammys as not only a fashionable accessory, but the perfect way to shield her mouth while chatting with friends.
She Gave Miley Her 'Flowers'
Miley Cyrus interrupted her own performance of “Flowers” to ask the seemingly unenthusiastic crowd, “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” (Gulp.) But Swift’s knowledge of the pop bop was never in doubt: Seconds after Cyrus questioned the audience, we glimpsed Swift and tablemate Kelsea Ballerini singing along with gusto and accuracy.
She Cheered on Olivia Rodrigo
This slideshow alone should prove that Swift singing along during awards show performances isn’t anything new. But it was notable to see her joining in on Olivia Rodrigo’s performance of “Vampire”; rumors of a feud between the two songstresses have floated around since 2021, and some have even theorized that Swift is the subject of “Vampire.”
“I was very surprised when people thought that,” Rodrigo previously said of the Swift-related “Vampire” rumors. “I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.”
She Announced a New Album!
What better way to announce a new album than when you’re accepting a Grammy for a previous album? After collecting the trophy for Best Pop Vocal Album (for Midnights), Swift noted that the win marked her 13th Grammy — her lucky number. In celebration of that significant milestone, Swift took the opportunity to share that her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, will release on Friday, April 19.
The news likely came as a (welcome!) surprise to the most devoted Swifties among us, many of whom anticipated that Swift would announce the forthcoming re-release of her Reputation album at Sunday’s Grammys. Swift has been re-recording her first six studio albums ever since 2019, when record executive Scooter Braun acquired the rights to Swift’s masters; Reputation appears poised to be next in the “Taylor’s Version” lineup, given notable Easter eggs that the singer has dropped for fans — including, as recently as Sunday morning, changing her social media profile pictures to a black-and-white image of herself, a clear nod to Reputation imagery.
She Showed Jack Antonoff Some Love
Well, we’re calling this “love,” even if it was of the most aggressive, sibling-esque variety. But there’s no question Swift was thrilled for her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, who won this year’s Grammy for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical). There was face-grabbing! There was light punching! And there was Antonoff, patiently waiting for the cameras to cut away from him.
She Belted a Celine Classic
Closed eyes, hands waving dramatically, lip-syncing emphatically — this is the only correct way to sing along with Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love,” and Swift nailed it as Dion took the stage to present the Album of the Year award.
She Made Grammy History!
Swift capped her eventful night by putting her name in the Grammy history books once again: With Midnights picking up the Album of the Year trophy, Swift became the first performer to win that award four times, having previously emerged victorious in the category with Fearless, 1989 and folklore.
“For me, the award is the work,” Swift said in her acceptance speech. “All I want to do is keep doing this, so thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much.”
